Othoni: Τhe heaven on earth at the western tip of Greece
Othoni is the largest island of the Diapontian Islands and the westernmost point of the Greek territory. It has two main settlements, a seaside one called Ammos, which is also the port of the island, and a more mountainous one called Chorio, as well as smaller ones such as Kasimatika and Deletatika.
On the east coast of the island is Akrotiri Kastri, where there are the ruins of a Venetian castle, and the impressive lighthouse, which is located at an altitude of 100 meters above sea level.
The vegetation in this fertile refuge is abundant. The island is full of cypresses, chestnuts, sycamores, hollies, myrtles, wild olives, tamarinds, pumpkins, oaks, heathers, sage, thyme, capers, milkweed and asparagus. Around 300 species of plants have been identified to date in the Othoni. It is also an important stopover for many migratory bird species.
The area – especially the beaches – offers visitors complete tranquility and seclusion, as most of the island’s coastline is steep and rocky, making it neither popular nor easily accessible.
White Sand, as its name suggests, is a sandy beach with fine, white sand, pebbles and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Above it rises a vertical rock that is surprisingly sharp and sculpted.
A little further away from the beach is the Cave of Calypso with the emerald waters, where, according to legend, the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years.
North of the island of Othoni, the bay of Fiki is ideal for diving, with the sunken wreck of the ship Sara. Around it there are dozens of reefs and islets, the most important being Koukouli.

The other beaches of Mathraki are mainly rocky bays, such as Arvanitiko, Kontrakas, Fiki and Agouridi beach. All the beaches of Mathraki are accessible on foot from the port.
There are no attractions in Mathraki, except hiking and swimming in isolated beaches. The only village in Mathraki is Chorio, while the port is called Plakes.
